Maos Last Dancer free essay sample
The 2003 autobiography Maos Last Dancer, by Li Cunxin, is a book that is open to interpretation. Overall, it is an interesting book that presents many different ideas and themes, including traditional Chinese culture and the comparison between East and West ideology. Maos Last Dancer tells the tale of Li Cunxin, a Chinese dancer in the Houston Ballet, and his adventures. The book also includes various members of Lis family, his dance teachers at his ballet academy and the friends he makes as he travels to the U. S. A. At the age of 11, Li was taken from a poor Chinese village by Madame Maos cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange trip to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect to the United States, getting married to do so, and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet. We will write a custom essay sample on Maos Last Dancer or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Maos Last Dancer is an autobiography in nature, and this means that anyone who can read will enjoy this tale of determination and perseverance. It is written is such a way that younger readers can enjoy a great tale of a dancer growing up from the forgotten regions of poverty stricken China, and younger readers will particularly enjoy the various fables scattered thorough the story. One of these fables is especially relative to the main story, and this specific one tells the story of a frog at the bottom of a well who hears about a wider, more colourful world outside of the stone walls trapping him in the darkness. The frog dreams of seeing this better world, and he tries and tries to climb up the slippery walls of the wells. For the more mature readers, Maos Last Dancer presents many deeper themes, like Communism and poverty, and also presents many comparisons between certain aspects of life, like the differences in culture between the East and West. All in all, this book provides a window of opportunity leading to an entertaining read for all members of the family. Maos Last Dancer basically only has three main settings. The first part of the book is based around Lis childhood, being set in his small village in rural China. The second part of the book is about Lis travelling to Beijingà and how he starts and continues to train at a ballet academy. The final part of the book is set in Houston, and follows Lis professional ballet career. This part also outlines the relationships Li falls into and explains his struggle in defecting to the United States. This book touches upon many themes and ideas, and is particularly good at presenting these themes from the perspective of a person that cannot change the m. For instance, Communism as an idea is explored thorough the novel with some detail, and the story helps us to see how helpless the sufferers of the ideology cannot change their struggle. The writing style and the story itself really puts us into an over the shoulder perspective when reading the text. It makes you feel like you are in a dream watching Li perform his tasks and live out his life. The way it is written does not tell us what Li is like, it lets us make our own judgment of him, letting us decide on our own if he is deserving of the extraordinary feats he accomplished. The links between the different ages of Li are seamless and are barely noticed. Its transitions between the days passed and even the years rolling over seem to go without a hitch. The story and tale itself has a really smooth, flowing timeline. The first part of the book is interesting, yes, but seems to go nowhere until he reaches his schooling life, which is further along in the part. This shows us that the story is not meant to be fast paced action, but rather a relatively slow tale of change with elements of political drama. The only part of the book that seems to present any action is where he visits the Chinese embassy in the United States and is taken captive for a while, but even then it is not very fast. To summarise, this story is for people who want to read a slow-paced perseverance story with many emotional and relatable aspects, so not everyone will actively enjoy its text. To conclude, Maos Last Dancer is a complex read. It can be interpreted on many different levels and has many different aspects making up its content. This novel is not for action fans, but some political drama followers might be inclined to take a glance at this book. The main audience however is the lovers of emotional, cultural difference and determination stories, and it really helps us to see where we stand in this world.

Capacity to be bound to the contract
Capacity to be bound to the contract Disclaimer: This work has been submitted by a student. This is not an example of the work produced by our Law Essay Writing Service . You can view samples of our professional work here . Capacity to be bound to the contract In the aspect of law, a contract is a legally binding agreement between two or more parties which contain elements of a valid legal agreement which is enforceable by law. An agreement is said to be reached when an offer offered by the offeree has been accept by the acceptor as an acceptance. These parties must have the capacity to be bound to the contract and the contract must not be insignificant, vague, unfeasible, or against the law. In daily life, most contracts can be and are made orally, such as purchasing a can drink or stationeries. Any oral agreement between two parties can form a legal binding contract as long as the good or service provided is legal. However, some contracts require material evidence, written documents for example purchasing a house as sometimes written contracts are required by either the parties, or by statutory law within various jurisdictions. When disputes arise among parties of the contract, the courts will have t o decide the judgment based on wheatear to place emphasis on intention of parties to the contract or other policy of considerations. 2.0 Intention to Create Legal Relations 2.1 Definition The Law recognizes that often the parties do not intend to create a legally binding contract. The law therefore says that there must be an intention to create legal relations and make a distinction between social and domestic agreement (where the assumption is that there is no intention to create legal relations) and commercial and business agreements (where the law assumes that the parties intend the agreement to be legally binding). 2.2 Social and Domestic Agreements 2.2.1 Agreements treated as not legally binding The cases suggest that agreements within families will generally be treated as not legally binding. For example, in Jones V Padavattan (1969), Mrs. Jones offered a monthly allowance to her daughter if she would give up her job in the USA and come to England and study to become a barrist er. Because of accommodation problems, Mrs. Jones bought a house in London, where the daughter lived and received rents from other tenants. They later quarreled and the mother sought repossession of the house. The courts decided that there was no intention to create legal relations and that all the arrangements were just part of ordinary family life. Therefore, the mother was not liable on the maintenance agreement and could also claim the house. In Balfour V Balfour (1919), the issue was the promise made by a husband to pay his wife allowance while he was abroad. He failed to keep up the payments when the marriage broke down. The wife sued but it was held that arrangements between husband and wives are not contracts because the parties do not intend them to be legally binding. The court also decided that she had given no consideration for the husbandââ¬â¢s promise. 2.2.2 Agreements treated as legally binding In the case of Merritt V Merritt (1970), the husband had already left h is wife and they met to make arrangements for the future. The husband agreed to pay 40 pounds per month maintenance, out of which the wife would pay the mortgage. When the mortgage was paid off he would transfer the house from joint names to the wifeââ¬â¢s name. He wrote this down and signed the paper, but later refused to transfer the house. The court was held that when the agreement was made, the husband and wife were no longer living together; therefore they must have intended the agreement to be binging and their intention to base their future actions on the agreement was evidenced by the writing. The husband had to transfer the house to the wife.
